Which Mac mini for an iPhone Farm? Calculator
How many iPhones can one Mac mini run? Enter your number of phones and see which model fits, how many Macs you need and how safe each option is.

Memory decides how many iPhones one Mac mini can run. Each iPhone needs its own control process on the Mac, about 175 MB, and macOS plus the software need about 6 GB on top. A Mac mini with 16 GB runs 12 iPhones at once in our own farm. For up to 40 iPhones, take 24 GB. Above 40, add a second Mac. Enter your own number below.

How many iPhones can one Mac mini run?
The limit is memory, not the processor. Our own Mac mini runs 12 iPhones at the same time and its processor sits mostly idle. Every phone adds a control process of about 175 MB, so memory fills up long before anything else does.
| iPhones per Mac | Memory needed | Mac mini to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 1–12 | about 8 GB | 16 GB |
| 13–20 | about 10 GB | 16 GB works, 24 GB if you plan to grow |
| 21–40 | about 14 GB | 24 GB |
| more than 40 | a second Mac |
Everything above 12 iPhones is calculated from that measurement. We have never run more than 40 iPhones on one Mac, which is why the calculator caps its estimate there.
One big Mac or two small ones?
From about 20 iPhones, two smaller Macs are often the better choice. When a Mac restarts, updates or runs into a problem, every phone on it stops. With two Macs, the other half keeps working. Two Mac minis with 16 GB cost $1,798, one with 24 GB costs $1,299, so reliability costs about $500 more. One Apple developer account still covers both. The calculator shows both options side by side from 21 iPhones.
Do I need the Pro model?
No, not for the phones. The M6 and the M5 Pro have the same number of ports: three Thunderbolt ports on the back and two USB-C ports on the front. The Pro ports are faster, but phones on USB hubs never use that speed. What the Pro adds is room for more memory, up to 64 GB, which only matters if you want far more than 40 iPhones on one Mac.
How much storage does the Mac need?
256 GB is enough. A running farm uses about 100 to 130 GB in steady state: macOS, Xcode, and log files that the agent software clears every hour. Larger storage is only worth it if you keep videos on the Mac.
What else do I need besides the Mac?
- Powered USB hubs. With 20 or more phones, hubs and cables are more often the problem than the Mac. Hubs without their own power supply drop phones.
- An Apple developer account. It costs $99 a year and covers up to 100 iPhones. A bigger farm needs a second account.
- A Mac that never sleeps. Turn sleep off. After a restart someone has to log in again before the phones come back.
If you would rather not set any of this up, our farm boxes arrive assembled and tested, and the software runs on your own Mac as well.
FAQ
How many iPhones can a Mac mini with 16 GB run?
We run 12 iPhones at once on a Mac mini with 16 GB. Up to about 20 is possible by calculation, but memory gets tight, so take 24 GB if you plan to grow.
Is one Mac mini enough for 40 iPhones?
A Mac mini with 24 GB covers 40 iPhones by calculation, with room left for macOS. We have not run 40 phones on one Mac ourselves. For more than 40, use a second Mac.
Does the processor matter?
Hardly. Our Mac mini has a 10-core M4 and stays about 85 % idle while running 12 iPhones. The current M6 has 12 cores, the M5 Pro 15 or 18. Spend the money on memory instead.
