Phone Farm ROI: When Does It Pay Off?

A 20-phone Android box costs $2,110 with freight plus $99 a month. The payback formula, worked examples and when renting beats buying on return.

A phone farm pays off when the monthly value it creates for your business is larger than its running cost, and the upfront cost is recovered from that difference. A 20-phone Android box costs $2,110 with freight and $99 a month for software, so every month in which the farm's work is worth more than $99 plus your connectivity and AI credit pays back part of the $2,110. Nobody can tell you in advance what your farm will earn. What we can give you is the exact cost side from our own shop and software pricing, and a formula you can fill in with your own numbers.

How do you calculate phone farm ROI?

ROI has two sides. The cost side is known and fixed by price lists. The value side depends entirely on your business: what the accounts sell, what clients pay you, how much content you have and how well it performs.

Use three numbers:

  • U — upfront cost. What you pay once: the box and freight.
  • R — running cost per month. Software, connectivity and AI credit (on a rental, the rack fee instead).
  • V — value per month. The gross profit the farm's accounts bring in, or the fees clients pay you for the work those phones do.

Then:

  • Monthly margin = V − R
  • Payback in months = U ÷ (V − R)
  • ROI after 12 months = (12 × (V − R) − U) ÷ (U + 12 × R)

If V is not larger than R, there is no payback, however cheap the hardware is. That is the first thing to check.

What goes into the cost side?

Every price below comes from our current price lists.

Cost linePrice
Android box, 20 phones$1,880
iPhone SE box, 20 phones$3,700
iPhone 12 box, 20 phones$6,400
Empty Lightning box, bring your own iPhones$690
Stackable iPhone rack, 20 slots, bring your own iPhones$299
Freight$230 flat, free above $5,000 of goods
Software, Standard (up to 25 phones)$99 a month, or $990 a year
Software, Full version (up to 100 phones)$249 a month, or $2,490 a year

So U for a 20-phone farm you own is $2,110 (Android), $3,930 (iPhone SE) or $6,630 (iPhone 12). Import duty and tax are declared and paid by you in your own country.

R starts at $99 a month for the software, and adds two lines that depend on how you run the farm:

  • Connectivity. On a box you own, SIMs or proxies come from your own provider, so we cannot price them for you. See phone farm proxies and SIMs for the options.
  • AI credit. Automations such as warm-up, posting and scrolling run on prepaid credit, charged by what they actually use. The calculator on the Billing page estimates this before you start. Details are in the automation credit guide. Live view and manual control never use credit.

The full breakdown of every cost line is in how much a phone farm costs.

What does renting change in the formula?

Renting moves almost everything from U into R. There is no box to buy, and the control software is included.

Hosted phonesSamsungiPhone
10–19$63 per phone per month$79
20–49$50$63
50+negotiatednegotiated

For 20 rented Samsungs, U is $0 and R is $1,000 a month before connectivity and AI credit. Bring your own proxy and it is included; a managed mobile proxy is $95 a month plus $95 once for up to 20 phones.

That makes the break-even question very different:

  • Owned Android box: the farm needs to be worth more than about $99 a month (plus your connectivity and AI credit) to cover running costs, and then pays back $2,110.
  • Rented 20 Samsungs: the farm needs to be worth more than $1,000 a month (plus AI credit) from the first month, but there is nothing to pay back.

This is why renting suits a test and buying suits an operation that has already shown it works. The month-by-month comparison is in rent vs buy a phone farm.

What does a worked example look like?

The value numbers below are example assumptions, not forecasts or typical results. They exist only to show how the formula behaves. To keep the example honest, it leaves out connectivity and AI credit, because those depend on your setup. Subtract them from the margin before you trust any result.

Setup: one Android box, Standard software. U = $2,110. R = $99 a month.

Example value V per monthMonthly margin (V − R)Payback12-month result (12 × margin − U)
$300$201about 10.5 months$302
$600$501about 4.2 months$3,902
$1,200$1,101about 1.9 months$11,102

Same example values on a rental: 20 Samsungs at $1,000 a month, software included, U = $0.

Example value V per monthMonthly margin (V − $1,000)12-month result
$300−$700−$8,400
$600−$400−$4,800
$1,200$200$2,400

Two things stand out. First, at low values an owned box can still pay back within a year while a rental loses money every month. Second, the payback time is very sensitive to V. That is why the value side needs real measurement, not hope.

Example: cumulative result at V = $600 a month

How do the iPhone boxes compare?

The formula is the same; only U changes. With Standard software at $99 a month and the same example values:

BoxU (with freight)Payback at example V = $600Payback at example V = $1,200
Android$2,110about 4.2 monthsabout 1.9 months
iPhone SE$3,930about 7.8 monthsabout 3.6 months
iPhone 12$6,630about 13.2 monthsabout 6 months

Whether iPhones are worth the higher U depends on your platforms and accounts, not on this table. iPhone vs Android for a phone farm covers that trade-off.

Where does the value side actually come from?

V is the hard part, and it is specific to your business. Common sources:

  • Your own brand or shop. Sales you can trace back to the farm's accounts, for example through tracked links or discount codes.
  • Client work. An agency charges clients for running accounts or campaigns. Here V is simply the fees tied to the phones.
  • Creator operations. Revenue from accounts you run for creators or pages you own, under whatever arrangement you have.

Reach, views and follower growth are never guaranteed. Platforms decide what they show, their rules change, and each platform's terms apply to every account you run. Plan with conservative V, and only count value you can actually measure.

How do you measure V without guessing?

  • Start small. Renting ten Samsungs costs $630 a month and needs no upfront spend. Run it long enough to see real numbers before you buy a box.
  • Tie every account to a source of value. A link, a code, a client or a product. Accounts without a clear link to V are cost, not return.
  • Use the analytics. The software reads views and followers from the phones (TikTok today, other platforms as they are confirmed), and you can add your revenue yourself next to them. Standard keeps the last 7 days; the Full version keeps the whole history, which matters once you compare months.
  • Count the people. Assistants are usually the biggest line in an operation. Treat their time as part of R, even though it is not on our invoice.

What makes the payback faster or slower?

Faster:

  • Buying once the value is proven, so U is spread over many productive months.
  • Keeping every slot busy. An idle phone adds nothing to V.
  • A steady supply of content. Phones post what you give them.
  • The yearly software plan, which costs ten months instead of twelve.

Slower:

  • Buying before you know V.
  • Unplanned connectivity costs. Our team plans connectivity with you, so ask before you buy.
  • Automations running more than the work needs. The AI credit calculator shows the cost before you start.
  • Account trouble from pushing too hard. Automations should stay human-paced and follow platform rules.

When does buying beat renting on ROI?

Buying a 20-phone Android box costs less than renting 20 Samsungs from the third month, before connectivity. So if the farm will run for a year or more and V is proven, buying gives the better return. If you are still testing, need phones within a working day, or run projects that start and stop, the rental keeps your downside capped at one month. Not sure which fits your numbers? Ask the team with your phone count and platforms.

FAQ

How long does a phone farm take to pay for itself?

It depends on the value your accounts create. The payback is the upfront cost divided by the monthly margin. For a 20-phone Android box that is $2,110 divided by what the farm is worth to you each month minus $99 for software and your connectivity and AI credit.

Can you tell me how much a phone farm will earn?

No. Earnings depend on your business, content, platforms and clients. We publish the cost side precisely and give you the formula; the value side has to come from your own measurements.

Is renting or buying better for ROI?

Buying usually gives the better long-term return because the running cost drops to the software, your connectivity and AI credit. Renting has no upfront cost and caps your risk at one month, which makes it better for testing.

What costs do people forget in an ROI calculation?

Connectivity, AI credit for automations, assistants' time and content production. Only the first two relate to the phones; the rest are part of running any social media operation.

Does the software cost more as the farm grows?

Standard at $99 a month covers up to 25 phones. The Full version at $249 covers up to 100, and each further 50 phones add $79 a month. Posts and accounts are unlimited in both plans.
